Matthew 5:13-16
13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
When Jesus called us, His disciples, salt and light of the world, He defined the meaning and purpose for our existence in this world - to be salt and give saltiness, and, to be light and give light. As Christians this is our inescapable mission just like there is no way to remain hidden when a city is built on a hill. However it is possible for the salt to lose its flavor and for the light to be covered under a basket. Oh when we lose sight of this high calling and refuse to consecrate all we are and all we have to our Lord (Luke 14:33-35), we give up our usefulness in the Master's hand and have departed from our God-ordained position.
ReplyDeleteAs indispensable light and salt are, this dark, fallen world needs a living demonstration of the blessedness of the gospel Jesus preached in the beginning of this chapter (Matthew 5). Arise, children of God, and let our lives reflect that true Light to glorify to our Father in heaven!
